Three to See Edmonton Events: Wheeler and Reese, Free Comic Book Day and Les Mis songs

Article content

Art Inspiring Art: Internationally known expat filmmaker Anne Wheeler and Unforgiven/Brokeback Mountain actor Larry Reese show off their canvas chops in this duo show at the coolest church gallery in Old Strathcona. While the two have worked together on various projects since the late ’60s, this is their first art exhibit pairing.

The show’s title reflects the spillover nature of playing in multiple genres, and to demonstrate at the opening Wheeler will read from her book Taken by the Muse while Reese accompanies her on sitar. Bev Ross will also be singing and playing piano, harp and tamboura — so come by and watch the media genres melt together into a delicious stew.

Free Comic Book Day: Almost 50 new, free comics are available to collect in this annual international event, including, appropriately enough, Star Wars titles as it’s May the Fourth (be with you). Archie, Snoopy, Hellboy, Gatchaman, Ninja Turtles, Street Fighter, Pokemon, Monster High, Maleificent and many other indie-to-mainstream titles will be out on the tables at various locations in town, including Variant Edition, Rolling Tales, Warp 1 and 2, Sanctum Comics and Comic Fever — call your favourite comic store to see what other offers they have!

Les Mis: Two Saturday concerts by So Noted Singers finishes off St. Albert choral group’s inaugural season to the tune of songs from Les Miserables, music by Claude-Michel Schönberg, English lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer. Set in 19th-century France, if you don’t know the tale, it’s the redemption story of peasant Jean Valjean, released after serving 19 years in jail for stealing a loaf of bread — then getting caught up in the wider revolution.

May we avoid such head-lopping chaos ahead — but just in case, here’s some great music to sing!
