Local speedskaters to Caraquet meet

Ten skaters from the Fredericton Amateur Speedskating Club are off to the 2009 Caraquet all points meet this weekend.

Andrew Evans, Brendon Corey and Carter Harrington compete in Division 1, Heidy Evans and Sebastien Arsenault in Division 2, Sophia and Isaac Gallagher are in Division 4, Nathaniel and Kristy Crabbe in Division 5 and Remi Walhain in Division 6.

The next competitive meet on the calendar is the annual Harold Joyce Invitational, scheduled Nov. 21-22 at the Aitken Centre.

Former NBer Jayner on TV this weekend

Former New Brunswick speedskater Travis Jayner, a dual Canada/U.S. citizen with Riverview roots, will skate for the U.S. at World Cup speedskating races today and Sunday at the Maurice Richard Arena in Montreal.

Canada's Olympic athletes will compete in the 500 and 1,500 meter races today and the 1,000 metre and relay events on Sunday, to be broadcast at 6 p.m. AT on CBC today and 4 p.m. Sunday.

Jayner has posted the fastest 1,000-metre time of skaters in the competition, easily winning heat and pre-preliminary races, and reached the quarter-finals in the 1,500-metre event.

Henry earns nod for FCGHL award

Brent Henry of the Animal Essentials Alpines pocketed his second hat trick of the season and added an assist to earn the nod as the Fredericton Commercial Gent's Hockey League's Dairy Queen player of the week. Henry now sits second in league scoring after his offensive production.

Others nominated were Brian Paul, Frank Merrill, Chris Boulter, Todd Canavan and Terry Bergin.

Fredericton minor ball AGM set for Nov. 16

The Fredericton Minor Baseball Association will hold its annual general meeting on Monday, Nov. 16 at 7:30 p.m. at the Fredericton Inn to lay plans for the 2010 baseball season.

Several positions on the executive are open.

Oromocto sports wall induction tonight

The Oromocto and Area Sports Wall of Fame will be hosting their annual induction ceremony tonight at 7 p.m. at the Oromocto Legion Branch 93.

Inductees include track and field athletes Jamie Ayles and Sandra Orban, builder Hubert Hanson, bowler Theodore Nitz and curler Roly Mockler.

Polchies beats Peppard in Dooly's 8-ball final

Randy Polchies defeated Sean Peppard 3-1 in the final set to win first place in the A division of Dooly's Monday 8-Ball league. Chris Polchies downed Matt Crawford 3-2 in the third place contest. Crawford leads the division with his 13 points, 196 wins and 75 winning percentage. Mike Skinner holds down second place with his 10 points.

In B division play, Damion Bayer downed newcomer Don Solomon 3-1 in the deciding set. Third place went to Brian Scott.

Bayer leads the B division standings with his 26 points and 74 wins.

League play takes place every Monday at Dooly's Prospect. Everyone is welcome, especially beginners.
