Only two teams from restigouche, both from Campbellton high schools, are left in the hunt for an nbIAA provincial soccer banner following action last weekend.
The Sugarloaf Senior High School Bruins and the Polyvalente Roland Pepin Lady Predateurs made it through their respective soccer regionals that were contested to determine the final four in both boys and girls' AA divisions.
The Lady Preds will be seeded number one from the Northeastern Conference after winning the regional tournament in Petitcodiac on Oct. 31. Ecole aux Quatre Vents also sent a team but the Lady Cyclones lost their first game of the regionals and were eliminated from further play this year.
The NBIAA AA girls' championship will take place in Hartland tomorrow, Saturday. As of press time, it was not known who they will play but it will be the number two team from the Southwest Conference.
The Bruins defeated the #1 seed from the East, Minto Memorial, by a 2-1 score. The Bruins led 1-0 after the first half as Jeremy Lavoie worked his way around two defenders to notch SSHS's first goal.
Minto replied early in the second half and with five minutes left in the game a hand-ball was called against a Minto player resulting in a penalty shot for SSHS. Cody Furlotte stepped up and potted SSHS's second goal which proved to be the winner.
In the other semi-final, Blackville High School needed overtime and a shootout to defeat Belleisle Regional High School 1-0.
In the Northeast Regional final, the battered teams played an exciting match at the DRHS field. Both teams had some great scoring chances with both goalies playing superb defence.
The game ended scoreless after regulation and overtime. The final then entered a shootout where the Golden Hawks captured their first Northeast title by handing the Bruins a 1-0 defeat.
Both teams move on to the NBIAA provincials (the second in a row for the Bruins) this weekend in Minto. In the semi-finals, Blackville, the #1 seed from the Northeast takes on the #2 seed from the Southwest, Ecole Samuel-de-Champlain (Saint John) and the Bruins, the #2 seed from the Northeast, takes on the #1 seed from the Southwest, Rothesay Netherwood.
The two winners then the final, where one team will come away with the NBIAA AA banner.
